Central Power Research Institute (CPRI)

Shivakumar is Joint Director and heading the Smart Grid Research Laboratory Division at CPRI, Bengaluru where he is leading the team in communication protocols & security conformance testing of devices used in the power sector and AMI system testing. With nearly 35 years of service at CPRI, he worked in various domains of R&D, testing and consultancy in the power sector and contributed in the development of static energy meters, GPS based Time Synchronizing Unit, power line communication of both narrowband and broadband for AMR of energy meter and broadband service over power line, automated radio based streetlight controller and others. Under his leadership Test facility for communication protocol and security conformance testing laboratory as per IEC 60870-5-101/104 and IEC 62351 was established at CPRI and this is the only laboratory in India as on date. He was key contributor and instrumental to bring out Indian first standard on cyber security exclusively for power sector application and same was published by BIS as IS 16335 during 2015. Under his convenorship this standard has been revised and published by BIS as 2nd edition during 2025. He is member of BIS LITD 10 and IEC TC 57 WG 15, the key standardization committees on Power systems management and associated information exchange and data & communication security since last 15 years. He holds both bachelors and master’s degrees in Electronics & Communication Engineering from the UVCE, Bengaluru University.
